He has admitted that he has never cared for or read comics. If you don't read them, you have no connection with the characters, the stories and history of the comic universe, feels no connection and has never forgot everything around you when reading the comic. All an outsider sees are individuals in costumes, many with powers out of the ordinary fighting against other persons with costumes and powers. No personal connection, no soul or emotional experience, just a potential for action. To really tap into it, you need to feel something, to lose yourself in that world, and then recreate these experiences on the big screen.

I remember I read the letter column about the response to the story Wildways in X-Men. I hated it, and judging by the letter, I was not the only one. It had a lot of action and imagination, but it still sucked. Someone who don't read comics would have no idea why so many hated the story. "Why?", they would say. "It's just another story about superheroes fighting baddies. I don't understand why some are considered good and some bad." From an outside point of view, it might not be much of a difference, because there is no emotional connection. For those who are into it, there is no need for explanations. And if someone like that should make a movie, they could perhaps do the adaptation better. The stories that are chosen today are bestsellers and/or a content that is estimated works good on the big screen. It's all calculations.
