In the scene where MacDonald is testing Haynes in case he was stopped for questioning, MacDonald admonishes him for forgetting to respond in German. When it was MacDonald who responded "Thank you" in English to the Gestapo agent wishing him "Good Luck". That's what got them caught. Ironic.

And did you know, rixter, that this was not a screenwriter's invention, but actually happened? The Frenchman Bernard Scheidhauer, the youngest of the Great Escapers, was accompanying Roger Bushell (on whom Roger Bartlett was based) when he made the mistake at a border crossing.
