Agent 13's role

Posted by Girlso

I thought it was pretty bad.

I understand it is supposed to be her introduction, but I think it fails even as that.

An introduction is supposed to leave one wanting more, and I don't think it did. I want more Falcon, more Winter Soldier, more Maria Hill even, but it didn't really get me excited about the prospect of more Agent 13.

What few actions she had didn't effect anything. It was kind of lame how she got taken out so effortlessly by Rumlow.

And as far as setting up a future romance, it fails at that, too. Their initial interaction comes across as rather stilted, which is fine since Steve isn't really interacting with Sharon, but with a role she's playing. After that, the two never interact beyond the moment outside Pierce's office. We're given little reason to think she's a character worth seeing more of. And Natasha's recommendation that Steve date her ends up saying more about Natasha than it does about Sharon.

Basically, while this movie doesn't suffer from a lack of Agent 13, I think her lack of development might cause the next one to suffer.

The movie is entirely about the Winter Soldier and Hydra. Steve adapting to the modern world is just a sub-plot for character development. The movie's job is to tell a complete story as if there would be no sequels of any kind. This isn't a 2 part movie like the Matrix 2 and 3. There was no "to be continued" at the end.

You can have compelling story while setting up next installments.

In fact, that's pretty much how Marvel works. If they didn't think ahead, they might not have had Bucky outright dying in TFA, or making it out alive until the end, and then we wouldn't have Winter Soldier.

Other marvel movies have done it as well. Iron Man sets up the Mandarin (though it didn't materialize) but naming the terorist organization the Ten Rings.

Thor sets up the Avengers by having Loki disappear but survive.

The end of the movie of TWS has Bucky in the wind, and Steve and Sam setting out to get him back. The words "To be Continued" don't show up, but it certainly a 'to be continued' kind of ending.

And it is definitely an ending that expects there to be sequels.

Agent 13's role is little more than an easter egg. And since her role is that of a normal human, it wouldn't make any sense for her to be doing especially amazing things that other normal humans in the movie aren't doing.

Sam, Natasha, Fury and Maria are all normal humans who do impressive things.

Her being a character in the background will create all the more shock when she eventually does return in the sequel. And yes, she is meant to be in the background. That's why she is called Agent 13 throughout and not even given a name.

Disagree. The movie is partially about setting up Steve in the modern world, and they said her role is a setup for future appearances. I'm addressing how effective it was at that.

And really, what movie's job is it to setup Cap 3, then? If Cap 2 is to setup Avengers 2, then surely it should setup Cap 3.

As for the scared nerd... Well, I just don't give a crap about him.

The movie's not even remotely about Agent 13. It's like you're complaining that Agent Coulson didn't do enough amazing things in Iron Man 2. This movie's job isn't to set up the next movie either. For the record, it was pretty heroic how she saved that scared nerd that Rumlow was about to shoot.
